The difference between shot blasting and sandblasting treatment

Date:2024-12-26

Shot blasting is the process of using a high-speed rotating impeller to throw small steel or iron pellets at high speed onto the surface of a component, thereby removing the oxide layer on the surface of the component. At the same time, the high-speed impact of steel or iron shot on the surface of the part causes lattice distortion and deformation, resulting in increased surface hardness. Shot blasting is a method of cleaning the surface of the part, and is commonly used for cleaning the surface of castings or strengthening the surface of the part.

Generally, shot blasting is used for regular shapes, with several heads working together from top to bottom, left to right, resulting in high efficiency and minimal pollution.

Shot blasting and sandblasting are commonly used in the repair and shipbuilding industry. But both shot blasting and sandblasting use compressed air. Of course, shot blasting does not necessarily require the use of high-speed rotating impellers. In the repair and shipbuilding industry, shot blasting (small steel shot) is generally used for steel plate pretreatment (rust removal before painting); Sandblasting (mineral sand is used in the repair and shipbuilding industry) is often used on formed ships or sections to remove old paint and rust from steel plates and repaint them. In the repair and shipbuilding industry, the main function of shot blasting and sandblasting is to increase the adhesion of steel plate coating paint.

In fact, cleaning castings is not just about shot blasting. For large parts, roller sand cleaning is usually carried out first, which means cutting off the riser of the casting and rolling it inside the roller. The parts collide with each other inside the roller to remove most of the surface sand before shot blasting or shot blasting.
